HELP! My Parrot is screaming!

on

But why and what you can do about it

You're just comfortably sitting on the couch with a cup of tea, and then... SCREAM!!

There goes your parrot again. Your ears hurt and you wonder: Why is it doing this?!
Don't panic! Screaming is normal parrot behavior, but there is good news: you can do something about it!
Let's dive into the world of parrots and discover why they sometimes turn into a noise machine.

Screaming is for a parrot like texting is for people
Parrots are just like group-chat active teenagers.

In the wild, they call out to their kind:
 Where are you!
 Watch out, there is danger!
 Hey, I'm awake, who else?

And you... are their group!
So if you just walk to the kitchen and they scream as if their life depends on it
That's just their way of saying: “Hey, have you forgotten me?!”

What does your bird want to tell you?
 HEY! Pay attention to me!
Shouting = getting attention. Sometimes even negative attention (“Quiet! No! Don't do that!”) works as a reward. Because hey, at least you're looking at them!
 Solution:
✔️ Reward quiet behavior (yes, really!) and give extra attention when they are calm.
✔️ Teach your bird that whispering and whistling also work to get your attention.

I am hungry and I want it NOW!
Some parrots are just like little trash cans and scream as soon as they think it's mealtime.
Solution:
✔️ Make mealtimes predictable, but only give food when he is calm.
✔️ Let him work for his food with enrichment like foraging toys.

I WANT TO SLEEP!
Parrots need 10-12 hours of sleep. Too little sleep = grumpy, screaming bird.
Solution:
✔️ Ensure a dark, quiet sleeping environment.
✔️ Stick to fixed bedtimes, as if you have a toddler in the house.

I'M BORED
Parrots are super smart and need challenges. No toys, no interaction? Okay, then I'll just scream!
Solution:
✔️ Toys! Foraging! Training!
✔️ Rotate toys so they always stay new and interesting.

WHERE ARE YOU... COME BACK!
Parrots are loyal ANIMALS and can become (too) strongly attached to their favorite person.
Are you going to the toilet? PANIC! COME BACK!
Solution:
✔️ Learn a farewell sound, like a whistle or a short word, e.g., see you soon
✔️ Let your bird get used to short moments alone without panicking.

How do you make your bird a calm housemate?
Reward good behavior and ignore unnecessary shouting.
✅ Ensure enough distraction and mental challenge.
Teach a friendly call, like a whistle instead of yelling.
Provide a predictable daily routine.

 When should you worry?
Is your parrot suddenly screaming much more than usual? Then something might be wrong:
Stress or anxiety due to changes in the house
Health problems (pain, hormonal frustration)
Too little sleep or poor nutrition

Screaming is part of it but doesn't have to be non-stop

Parrots talk, whistle, and... yes, sometimes also scream. But with the right approach, you can turn a noisy opera singer back into a pleasant housemate.

Doubtful? Have your bird checked by an avian veterinarian!
