The sun and your parrot: How to keep them cool and happy?
Parrots are used to heat, right?
But did you know that the bright Dutch sun can actually be dangerous for your tropical buddy?
In this blog, you’ll discover how to let your parrot safely enjoy summer days with the help of food and shade.
Why the sun in the Netherlands is not comparable to the tropics
Imagine: a beautiful, colorful parrot in your garden, whistling in the sunshine. It seems ideal. But what many people forget is that parrots in the wild rarely sit directly in the sun. In the rainforests of South America, Africa, and Australia, they mostly live under a dense canopy – protected from the hottest sun rays.
In the Netherlands, the sun is much more direct. And because parrots don’t sweat like we do, they can’t release their heat as well. Their feathers can even burn. Think of yourself wearing a thick winter coat in full sun – that’s how it feels for them.
Shade is not a luxury, but a necessity
Putting a parrot outside without shade is asking for trouble. Always provide a cool spot:
-Put the cage partly in the shade (natural shade or a parasol)
-Place plants around the aviary for a natural canopy
-Make sure your bird can choose where it sits
This way your bird not only stays safe but also feels more comfortable. And relaxed birds are healthier birds.
Nutrition as a cooling power
What many people don't know: the right nutrition really helps your parrot to cool down.
Pay extra attention on hot days to:
-Water-rich vegetables such as cucumber and celery
-Fresh fruit such as melon, blueberries, or strawberries
-Vegetables or lightly steamed vegetables
-Fruit take, for example, a piece of kiwi
These foods hydrate and are easy to digest – ideal in the heat. Avoid heavy, fatty seed mixes or nuts on hot days. And don't forget: a bath or a nice mist sprayer is a welcome cooling down.
Small gestures, big difference
Whether your parrot is on the balcony, in the garden, or just inside by a window: a little shade and the right nutrition are a big gesture of care. You are his safe haven with attention to his environment and nutrition.
Give him a summer full of comfort and health.
