What is Aspergillosis?

Aspergillosis is a serious fungal infection caused by the fungus Aspergillus, which is especially found in a moist environment. Parrots and other birds can become infected by inhaling fungal spores, which then settle in the airways and cause inflammation and infections there. If suspected... always consult your avian veterinarian!

How does a parrot get infected?

Parrots can contract aspergillosis through:

  • Moist and moldy food such as poorly stored nuts, seeds, or pellets.

  • Poor ventilation in the aviary or living room, creating an environment where molds thrive.

  • Dusty rooms with old floor coverings, hay or sawdust where mold spores accumulate, but also behind cabinets, etc.

  • Weakened immune system, for example due to stress, poor nutrition, or other underlying diseases.

Symptoms of Aspergillosis

Aspergillosis mainly affects the respiratory tract, but can also affect other organs. Symptoms may include:

  • Difficult or rapid breathing

  • Sneezing or scraping sounds when breathing

  • Reduced appetite and weight loss

  • Fatigue and less activity

  • Sudden shortness of breath in severe cases

Diagnosis and Treatment

Aspergillosis is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms resemble other respiratory diseases. An avian veterinarian can take X-rays, perform blood tests, or conduct an endoscopy to confirm the infection.

The treatment by an avian veterinarian may consist of:

  • Antifungal medication, as far as I know e.g. itraconazole or voriconazole.

  • Improvement of the living environment, such as better ventilation and mold-free food.

  • Supportive therapy, such as steaming or oxygen therapy for respiratory problems.

How can you minimize the risk of Aspergillosis?

Prevention is always better than cure!
A few tips to minimize the risk of aspergillosis:

  • Ensure a clean and well-ventilated living environment.

  • Avoid dust and mold by regularly cleaning the cage and not allowing old bedding to accumulate
but also watch out for any mold behind cabinets etc..

  • Only provide fresh and well-stored food,

  • Support your parrot's resistance with a varied diet and minimal stress.

Conclusion

Aspergillosis is a dangerous but often preventable disease in parrots. By being mindful of hygiene, nutrition, and living environment, you can significantly reduce the risk of infection. Do you notice symptoms in your bird? Don't wait, consult an avian veterinarian immediately.
